Many of today’s young guns were blazing this weekend in Texas at the 20th Veteran’s Park Open. It took extra holes, but Garrett Gurthie held off teammate Paul Ulibarri to snag his first PDGA win of the season. Dixon Jowers finished 5th, just 4 strokes off the lead. Avery Jenkins and Will Schusterick also played well finishing 6th and 8th respectively.

In the women’s division it was Des Reading picking up another late season win. Mitch McClellan got it done in a strong Masters field that included teammates Phil Arthur and Jay Reading. Mitch took the lead during round two and never looked back, cruising to a comfortable 5-shot win.

Around the tour...

Two other Innova team members battled to the finish in Warwick, NY over the weekend. Steve Brinster and Craig Cutler grabbed the top two spots at Animal Fest XII. It was an especially strong finish for Craig since he also served as the tournament director for the weekend. Pulling double duty is never an easy task, nor is trying to beat Steve Brinster in the Northeast. Kudos to both players for an outstanding weekend.

Speaking of tough to beat, if you plan to play pro at a B-tier in the Carolinas you may just want to see if Brian Schweberger is registered first. Schweb wins just about everything he attends around those parts. If he doesn’t win, he almost always comes close. Brian took home yet another title this weekend at the 9th Annual Fall Disc Golf Classic in Jacksonville, NC. Chris Lee, a long-time member of the Innova family, grabbed the win in Masters.

On the collegiate front, Clemson’s Connor Thompson won the Southeast Collegiate Championships in Georgia. Connor, son of PDGA Hall of Fame member Vanessa Chambers, is a rising young star. Congratulations to Connor for besting a 70-player field with students from around the southeast and as far west as Kansas.

Many players will now migrate south to Florida as the winter sets in. Up next for the big boys is the Moccasin Lake Open, then on to the Players Cup Match Play event to pretty much close the season. Safe travels and best of luck to everyone headed that way.
