What is your most memorable win?
2006 US Womens Disc Golf Championship – My first national title, and it got me into the USDGC. I had a 4 stroke lead going into the last round and my 55 was 7 strokes better than every other competitor!
How did you get started disc golfing?
I had a boyfriend who played a lot so I decided to try it out. I was given one disc, a 147g Whippet, and that was in 1997. I played a lot that summer and a coworker told me about a tournament coming up. After we played a round together he said I had to compete, so I did. But I lost my first disc the weekend before the tournament! I played the Cool Weather Classic in 1997 at Sugar Bottom Park with borrowed discs. I got an ace during my warm-up on hole #1 with a Cyclone signed by Scott Stokely. There were five women in my division, Novice Women. I came from behind and won the tournament.
I tried to participate in league in 1997 and 1998, but I worked too much. Finally, in April 1999, I got a job working nights as a Computer Operator. Even though I didn’t have the boyfriend anymore, I found myself at the disc golf course a lot. I played league in 1999 – 2003 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. My second tournament was in the fall of 1999 in Cedar Rapids. Doug Peyton made me play in the Advanced Women division. I played against five other women or so, including Des Reading, and I won. In 2000, I started traveling to tournaments in the Midwest. I played Advanced Women until August 2000. The other local Advanced Women disc golfers decided to move up to Pro after going to Am Worlds, and even though I didn’t go to Worlds, I moved up too. I have been playing Pro ever since.
Advice:
Practice a lot on and off the course, try new discs, get in league and play tournaments, grip is very important, ask a pro to help with your technique.
For the women...
All of you women out there, stick to it! Don’t give up! Play hard! We’d love to see you at the tournaments!!!
