Most Memorable Tournament:
This
year’s Pro Worlds. I got a ride at the last second to be
able to make the tournament. After hurting my knee during World
Doubles, I thought I wouldn’t be able to play singles and
was resigned to a week of spectating. Luckily, my knee bounced
back just in time, and I played really well and was tied for
9th place after two days when the pools were shuffled. I couldn’t
quite keep up that breakneck pace but I had a blast playing with
guys I had mostly just seen on DVDs for the rest of week. It
was a really great time for a first-timer from Montana!
Most Memorable Win:
My first win, the Montana State Championships, was my most memorable so far. I had been playing well leading up to it, but struggled out of the gate before turning it on late to end up in a three-way tie for first after regulation. I was tied with the defending champion and another up-and-comer from Montana. After two sudden death holes we were still all tied. By the fourth hole it was only the defending champion and I left, and I sunk a tough straddle putt from underneath a tree for the birdie and the win.
Goals:
I want to keep improving and having fun playing and meeting great people while finishing up my law degree at the University of Montana. Disc golf is growing very rapidly in Montana and I want to continue being a part of that process while traveling to larger events out-of-state when I can. In the long term, I want to help disc golf grow and be a positive force for change, on both the local and national levels. And of course, I want to be competitive on the national level for many years to come.
Advice to Other Players:
Learn on understable discs so you can familiarize yourself with the full flight of the disc, and remember that it's not all about the latest and greatest plastic, it's about learning the discs that you have. Try to play with players who are better than you whenever possible and learn from what they do. Finally, if you want to improve, you have to put the time in to your skills around the basket. Practice your short game as much as you can! Confidence in your around-the-green game translates into confidence in the rest of your game.
Additional Comments: I am really interested in disc golf's potential to be a positive force for raising environmental awareness. Our sport uses a great deal less resources and has a much smaller environmental impact than ball golf. As energy costs skyrocket, disc golf is in a great position to raise awareness while growing dramatically. I am always excited to talk to disc golfers about possibilities for the future of our sport (and planet) so please come up and strike up a conversation!
