Since having discovered Disc Golf in its infancy in 1975, Lavone has won over 55 disc golf titles marking him as one of the sport's steadiest players. His influence is widespread as a teacher, director, promoter and supporter of the sport. Lavone's commitment to running high-caliber tournaments--including two PDGA World Championships--have helped to set standards for the sport to follow.
What determines what division you play?
The competition level. If it is good in the Masters, that is what I play.
Goals:
To play my best, to represent the sport, to serve as an example for others on and off the course.
Most memorable win:
The 7th Annual 1985 Louisville Disc Derby by 10 strokes over a field of 155 Open Division players. It was
David Greenwell's hometown. I wanted the win badly enough to schedule a recruiting trip in Louisville a few days before so I could practice. Dave is a good friend and mentor. To compete with him anytime is special and an accomplishment.
My Favorite Tournaments:
Any tournament that is well run by a prepared staff that is consistent with their rules and commitments. I usually find this to be true in Bowling Green and Atlanta.
Advice:
Practice wooded courses, approach shots and putting. Throw for the putt zone not the basket. Eliminate bogeys, play the odds and the birdies will come. Play to have fun and enjoy the good shots of others.
